When Storm Solutions USA gets a request to quote a hurricane protection system, the first step is to get a set of floor plans, elevation drawings, and a window & door schedule plus section drawings as provided, printed to scale. After careful review, a discussion is held with the person who requested the quote to understand the type of protection system they (architect and or builder) was thinking of using. There are flexible fabric systems and rigid aluminum roll up or accordion shutters to select from.
If a flexible fabric system is selected then the direction (horizontal or vertical) the screens are to be used must be selected based on the span distance (24 feet is the maximum) and the type of structure into which the fastener must be installed. If the conditions are such that both directions are viable than vertical is selected as the preferred direction because it is somewhat easier to deploy.
The next decision is the type of attachment to use on the top and bottom for vertical screens and left and right for horizontal screens.
One option consists of a loop (top or right/left) and buckle strap (bottom or left/right) which are attached to either an open or closed eye bolt, the strap is pulled tight and secured.
Another option is using a Hemcord Soffit Extrusion (HSE) that is installed so the 3/4” wide x 5” deep extrusion surface is flush to the soffit. The HSE can be powder coated to a color of choice or anodized clear or black. The bottom of HSE screen uses the buckle strap system with fasteners installed into designed conditions. For horizontal screens, the Hemcord Perimeter Extrusion (HPE) can be installed on the left and right side of an opening and the 3/4” x 1.75” extrusion can get the same finishes as the HSE and also trimmed out to make them invisible. Both the HSE & HPE systems are extremely fast to deploy as half of all of the systems to install the screen are permanently installed.
A third option is the grommets which can be either horizontal or vertical but with 6” to 12” fastener spacing vs the 24” maximum spacing for loop/buckle strap screens. Grommet screens are good for smaller openings and vents.
When the rigid aluminum roll up or accordion system is selected then the mounting condition is always horizontal and the structural conditions for mounting either system must be considered and the appropriate fastener size and length selected. If motorized, which side is it on. If recessed, the depth must be sufficient to get the box and first slat above the finished soffit. There are standard colors available and custom colors far parts of each system are possible.
In any case, a call to Storm Solutions USA will ensure that you receive the best possible advice for your Storm Protection System.
